In May 2023, in Kasangati town council, Wakiso District, an ordinary day turned into an extraordinary act of community collaboration. Sadat, on his way to work, noticed a small child left all alone lying among bricks near his home.
Shocked and concerned, he quickly informed his wife, and together they retrieved the baby, cleaned and comforted him, and promptly reported the case to their local chairperson who advised them to report the situation to the police where a case file was opened.
Given the state of the child, in coordination with Child’s i Foundation, the baby was placed into foster care, and efforts to trace the child’s biological family began. The little boy, later named Gift, was admitted to a hospital and it was discovered that he had cerebral palsy, a condition that would require care and specialised support.
Once stable, Gift was placed into the loving care of Joweria, a foster mother. Trained and supported by Child’s i Foundation, Joweria welcomed Gift into her home, offering him a safe space and unconditional love and care.
With consistent medical check-ups and nutritional support, including special porridge rich in nutrients and milk formula, Gift’s health began to improve remarkably. The community nurse visiting the home observed that Gift was developing well, his health stabilised. His foster mother was also helping him learn how to sit and stand with support.
While Gift was thriving in his new environment, efforts to trace his biological family continued. Our dedicated social workers maintained regular contact with the Police, the chairperson, and other community members. They used local radio stations and made announcements in churches, mosques, and public places in hopes that a relative would come forward. Despite months of searching, no one came forward.
Given the prolonged absence of any biological relatives, Gift’s case was presented to the District Alternative Care Panel. This marked the beginning of a journey toward adoption, offering Gift the possibility of a permanent and loving family.
Throughout this journey, the social worker played a pivotal role, providing emotional and practical guidance to the foster family. The regular involvement of the community nurse and social workers ensured that Gift’s health improved significantly. His foster mother, Joweria, was consistently encouraged and equipped to give him the best possible care, from regular health check-ups to developmental exercises.
Today, Gift is a healthy and happy child, thriving in a nurturing environment. His foster mother continues to provide the love and security he needs, and Child’s i Foundation remains committed to ensuring that he is protected, cherished, and given the opportunity for a brighter future.
